Chiropractic Care for Numbness and Tingling
Mon, 24 Jul 2017 10:35:30 -0700

Our Chiropractor in Tulsa Treats Numbness and Tingling

Numbness and tingling often accompany other symptoms such as back, shoulder, neck pain, or sciatica, but they also occasionally occur on their own. Damage or compression to the nerves cause these sensations in the body. At Cole Chiropractic Clinic, our chiropractor in Tulsa, Dr. Christopher Cole helps patients regain normal sensations in throughout their bodies by applying basic chiropractic care methods to restore the nervous system to a normally functioning state.

When the body encounters stress of any kind (injuries, physical stress, emotional anxiety, and chemical stress), the vertebrae of the spine often become subluxated, meaning they move out of proper alignment. Spinal subluxations pinch and compress nerves running through the nervous system's primary channel, the spine. These compressed nerves cause all sorts of strange sensations like numbness, tingling, and pain throughout the body – not just locally within the spinal cord. our chiropractor in tulsa treats numbness and tingling

Using gentle chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Cole returns patients' spines to their proper alignment, relieving any pressure on the nerves. A holistic practice, chiropractic care also helps to accelerate the body's healing process. Dr. Cole works with patients experiencing numbness and tingling due to injury using spinal adjustments, corrective exercises, physical therapy, and even nutritional counseling to ensure patients' bodies have the vitamins, nutrients, and enzymes necessary for rebuilding at the cellular level.

Whiplash Treatment and Relief from Auto Accident Injuries with our Chiropractor in Tulsa

At Cole Chiropractic Clinic, our chiropractor in Tulsa, Dr. Christopher Cole emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical care after a vehicle collision. Though many injuries potentially sustained in an auto accident are immediately apparent, some, like whiplash, are usually not. After even a minor fender-bender, whiplash injuries can occur, but symptoms often do not present themselves for days or even weeks after the accident. For this reason, we encourage everyone who has been involved in a vehicle accident to seek immediate medical care for whiplash evaluation, diagnosis, and whiplash treatment. If left untreated, whiplash can lead to neck, back, and shoulder pain, headaches, migraines, limited range of motion, tingling in the arms and hands, and even severe depression, irritability, and insomnia. whiplash treatment and relief from your chiropractor in tulsa

What Causes Whiplash and How is it Treated?

When hit from behind, the necks of passengers in a vehicle move in a whip-like motion, hyperflexing and hyperextending the soft tissues in the neck. This movement outside of the neck's normal range of motion causes tissue damage and puts a strain on the vertebrae of the neck. Chiropractic spinal adjustments specifically treat musculoskeletal injuries by targeting the injured area, reducing inflammation, and increasing circulation to relieve pain, prevent scar tissue, and deliver the nutrients necessary for accelerated healing.

Find Immediate Relief with Tulsa Auto Accident Injury Treatment

If you have been involved in an auto accident, we encourage you to seek treatment right away. Vehicle accidents often result in injuries which initially present no symptoms, such as whiplash and even herniated discs. Early diagnosis and treatment will reduce the severity of future symptoms and complications due injury. With an individualized chiropractic care wellness plan, Tulsa auto accident injury treatment is designed to help each patient heal and resume normal activity as quickly as possible. If you are a new patient, we encourage you to contact our office at 918-664-2273 for a free consultation and immediate auto accident injury relief.

Causes of Pain Between the Shoulder Blades

Pain between the shoulder blades and other mid-back pain may appear suddenly following an accident or it may creep up on you gradually. Common causes of mid-back pain include:

  • Muscular strains- the muscle in this area are susceptible to strain and stress. If you lifted a heavy object, you may have irritated the muscles between your shoulder blades. Our ultrasound and corrective exercise techniques will help to heal this area.
  • Poor posture- if you lean forward to work on a computer or other objects throughout the day, you may overstretch the muscles of your mid-back. We can show you how to strengthen the area and stretch your chest to compensate for the muscular imbalance.
  • Spinal abnormality- if your spine is misaligned through either a condition such as scoliosis or a vertebrae that has shifted, chiropractic adjustments place your spine into a healthier, pain-free alignment.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic Care in Tulsa

'kiro praktik/

:a system of complementary medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is effective for neuromusculoskeletal complaints including neck pain, back pain, pain in the joints of the arms and legs, and headaches.

Dr. Cole practices a drug-free, hands-on and conservative approach to health care that includes a thorough examination, x-ray diagnosis, and treatment with manual spinal adjustments, physical therapy, rehabilitative exercise, and nutritional and dietary counseling by a certified nutritionist.

How Does Chiropractic At Your Tulsa Chiropractor Work?

How does chiropractic at your Tulsa chiropractor work? The most common procedure in our office is a spinal manipulation, or "chiropractic adjustment".

A spinal manipulation consists of a precise and controlled force applied to the transverse process or spinous process of a vertebra to correct misalignments. When vertebrae are restored to their proper position, the joint can move freely and pressure is reduced. Because misalignments are often caused by an injury to the soft tissue surrounding a vertebrae, it usually takes a series of chiropractic adjustments over a period of a few weeks to correct the misalignment completely and allow full healing of the soft tissue.

Ten Reasons to Never Ignore Numbness and Tingling
Fri, 14 Oct 2016 11:23:17 -0700

by Christopher K. Cole, DC, Chiropractor, Cole Chiropractic Clinic

Numbness and tingling are common conditions we see in our clinic.  However, they can be very serious symptoms. If you have numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, feet or hands, or anywhere else in the body, please contact our office for an evaluation. This is a symptom that requires prompt attention.

Ten Reasons to Never Ignore Numbness and Tingling

1.  It could be a sign of a serious condition.

2.  It could indicate nerve damage.

3.  You could have a repetitive stress disorder like carpal tunnel syndrome or tarsal tunnel syndrome.

4.  It can be caused by a serious vitamin deficiency.

5.  You could have a pinched nerve.

6.  You could have an issue with the central nervous system.

7.  You could have a herniated disc.

8.  You could have a circulation problem.

9.  You could have a systemic disease like liver disease, chronic inflammation, or a hormonal imbalance.

10. You could have a problem with the thyroid gland.

The Take-Away

Again, while numbness and tingling can be serious, it is something that can commonly be helped with chiropractic care.

What's the Deal with Coconut Oil?
Thu, 06 Oct 2016 09:31:28 -0700

by Linda Cole, Certified Nutritionist, Cole Chiropractic Clinic

The oils you use to cook with have a profound effect on your health, and specifically for our chiropractic patients, can worsen joint pain. Every cell membrane in your body is made up of fat (known as cholesterol), and how those cells operate and communicate with each other depends on the types of fats you eat. Cell membranes made of the proper ratio of omega 3 fats will give off anti-inflammatory chemicals, whereas cells made of bad fats will give off chemicals that cause inflammation and eventually disease in the body.

So, Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is made from the nut of a coconut palm tree. It can be processed in many ways, but I recommend using extra virgin coconut oil. Other forms are processed with chemical solvents to take away the coconut flavor and bleach the color. Chemical solvents give me the jeebies, so I stay away from them.

Health Effects

Coconut oil is 87% saturated fat. The kind that raises cholesterol. However, modern science has proved that dietary cholesterol is not as dangerous as was once thought. As long as you aren't eating coconut oil straight from the jar by the spoonful, I think it is a perfectly acceptable fat.

The reason it has become a go-to oil is that it contains no PUFAs. What's a PUFA, you ask?

PUFAs are polyunsaturated fatty acids. Without getting into the nerdy chemistry, there are two kinds of PUFAs your body needs; omega 3 fats (from fish, and flax seeds) and omega 6 fats (from corn oil, soybean oil, and margarine). The problem, in our Standard American Diet (known as SAD) is we get way too many omega 6s (the kind that cause inflammation, joint pain, diabetes, and depression) and not enough omega 3s (which prevent inflammation, joint pain, heart disease, dementia and some cancers).

To prevent adding any more omega 6 oils to the diet, it is better to use non-PUFA oils like coconut oil, olive oil and (yum) butter. Coconut oil should be used instead of Crisco (a trans fat which is disastrous to your health) in baking and sauteeing. It has a coconut flavor which is excellent in curries and exotic in stews.

Just like every other facet of your diet, eating a variety of oils ensures that you get the different fats your body needs. Because restaurants use cheap vegetable oils (omega 6s) I try not to use them at home. You get plenty of omega 6 oils in your diet from eating out. In fact, the big problem is that our bodies need a ratio of 3:1 omega 6 to omega 3 fats and the SAD is more like 20:1. It's one of the big reasons we are seeing so much obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and anxiety in the population.

The Take-Away

I don't usually recommend a big clean-out and throw away of food. But if you have trans fats in your cupboard, please get them out of the house. Your health is worth more than the few dollars you throw away. Try to substitute coconut oil for use in baking, sauteeing, and my fave, homemade popcorn. Use olive oil for sauteeing, dressings and in soups. Butter is delicious and great for an extra oomph of flavor when baking or sauteeing. Buy quality oils and check those expiration dates. Rancid oils are as bad for your health as using the wrong type of fat.

We welcome your comments

Text Neck?
Wed, 29 Apr 2015 07:23:47 -0700

More and more people in our tech-ridden era are constantly, and even obsessively, looking down at mobile phones, tablets and laptops.

An article in the Washington Post points out that, according to research published in the National Library of Medicine by Kenneth K. Hansraj MD, the average human head weighs 10-12 pounds. At a 15 degree tilt it weighs about 27 pounds, and at a 30 degree tilt it weighs about 40 pounds. At a tilt of 60 degrees, a whopping 60 pounds of force is put on the spine.

This study shows the added stress that a head forward posture creates. Dr. Hansraj goes on to say that "these stresses may lead to early wear, tear, degeneration and possible surgeries."

What To Do

It's becoming obvious that the head forward posture associated with our smart phone lifestyle is creating not only chronic spinal problems and pain but can also lead to permanent spinal conditions over time.

  • When using your phone or tablet try to avoid looking down for long periods. Try to be aware of your posture and avoid tilting your head forward throughout your normal daily routine.
  • Take breaks and stretch periodically.
  • Make sure that computer monitors are at eye level and you're not having to constantly look down at your monitor.
  • Look down with your eyes, not your neck.

Dr Cole Explains What Causes Low Back Pain
Thu, 20 Nov 2014 10:16:36 -0800

Is your low back pain driving you nuts? You and everyone else in Tulsa. Low back pain is the fifth most common reason for visits to the doctor in the U.S. and is the most common reason people under the age of 45 have to limit their activities.

When someone suffers from a case of intense low back pain, they often worry that it could be a result of something really serious; it sure feels like it is.  However, the fact is that most causes of low back pain are mechanical, meaning that they are not caused by such conditions as inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis), infection, fracture or cancer.

So what does cause low back pain?

As we get older our bones lose their strength, our ligaments aren't able to stretch like they did when we were younger and our muscles get weaker.

The discs in our backs are the shock absorbers of the spine.  As a result of wear and tear due to injury, age and overall use, they begin to dehydrate and lose their flexibility. This limits the discs' ability to cushion the vertebrae. A person may lift something too heavy, or overstretch their low backs, which can cause a light sprain or spasm in muscles or ligaments.  If overly strained, a disc may actually become injured and herniate or bulge outward. This is commonly called a "slipped disc". The bulge that results may put pressure on any one of the 50 sensitive nerves, restricting movement, affecting function and causing pain.

As this back injury heals, scar tissue is created and it doesn't have the flexibility or even the strength the normal tissue had. As a result of the accumulation of this scar tissue from repeated injuries, the back is eventually weakened and that can lead to a more serious injury.

Of course other factors have a part to play in this process; such as weight, smoking, pregnancy, posture and even poor sleeping positions.

Chiropractic treatment for low back pain is uniquely suited for the care of these conditions because chiropractic works to restore joint function and mobility, break up scar tissue, and reduce inflammation. It is a mechanical solution for a mechanical problem.

Occasionally, back pain can be caused by something more serious, so it is very important that you get a thorough chiropractic exam to rule out any serious complications.

Tulsa Chiropractor Shares 7 Tips to Prevent Neck Pain
Tue, 04 Nov 2014 10:14:34 -0800

1. Proper Pillow. You spend 1/3 of your life on one, so be sure it's the right one! Your head should be aligned with your shoulder, as if you were drawing a line from ear to shoulder and down the middle of your body horizontally. If your head tilts up or down you are putting pressure on your spine.

2.Don't sleep on your stomach! This does weird things to your posture. Your head is tilted at awkward angles and your spine is not supported by the mattress.  If you can't sleep any other way, put a pillow under your chest.

3.Exercise. Good for your whole body, but especially important to retain the full range of motion that your cervical spine can perform.  Stretching also helps prevent arthritis.

4.Set up your computer at a proper ergonomic height. Scrunching your shoulders forward and leaning into a computer all day does horrible things to your neck and upper back. Tight, tense muscles and poor posture can lead to a reversed cervical curve in your neck, resulting in long-term pain.

5.Relax. Time away from computer screens allows your neck to spend some time in its normal, healthy position.

6.Drink water. Lots of it. Water hydrates the discs in  your spine, which are basically fluid-filled cushions. Dehydrated cushions are not...well, cushiony...and lead to damage and injury.

7.Supplement. Glucosamine helps prevent the breakdown of cartilage in the joints, Boswellia is an anti-inflammatory, SAMe supports joint health and relieves pain, and Magnesium supports bones and nerve health. Even better, consistently eat a healthful diet of fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, fish and whole grains. Avoid processed foods and fast food restaurants.

And there you have it.  Seven tips and the hope that neck pain is something you never have to experience.

Why Chiropractic is Essential to Your New Year's Resolution
Sat, 25 Jan 2014 07:29:44 -0800

Happy New Year to All.

Many of you are trying to work up the motivation to begin your New Year’s Resolutions.  I know I am.

It always seems that most of these include exercise.  Obviously exercise is great for improving your overall health, an aid in losing weight, and is ideal for decreasing back and joint pain because it strengthens the muscles that support our spine and joints.  However, after long periods of, let’s say, not being quite so active, joints can tend to lose some of their mobility which can affect their ability to function and move as they are supposed to.  Of course, arthritis, age and stress are also big contributors.

Anyway, this leads me to the point of all this. When starting your resolutions for the new year, remember that throwing yourself into an exercise program that your body is not accustomed to can be quite a shock on your spine and joints. They might not be ready. This can lead not only to increased soreness from your workout but also to an increased risk of injury.

Chiropractic treatment works to increase the joint function and mobility which can be greatly beneficial to a new workout routine and help to decrease your risk of an injury.  Please call us in Tulsa at 664-2273 for a check-up. We are thrilled to be a part of your exercise regimen.

Now, one more thing.  If you’re over 25, try to stretch a bit before your workout begins. Studies show that stretching, especially after age 25, can help prevent some of those nasty injuries.

Again, Happy New Year! Thank you all for making us the Tulsa Chiropractor with the most success stories!

Tulsa Chiropractor Reflects on Recent Study of Neck Pain
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 16:23:12 -0800

Neck pain is a problem that will affect over 70% of Tulsans at some point in their lives. A new study shows chiropractic gives more relief for neck pain than medication or exercise. In the study, chiropractic treatment was over 2 times more effective than medication, and exercise came in a close second. The benefits of the chiropractic treatment were noted even a year later when researchers checked back with the groups: 53% of the people who had chiropractic care still reported a 75% reduction in pain compared to only 38% of those who were taking medication. They further elaborated that the medication group kept using a higher amount of medication more frequently throughout the follow-up period up to a year later. In this study the patients who received chiropractic treatment seemed to require the least amount of treatment with patients averaging only 15 treatments whereas the treatment for exercise was a regimen of 5-10 repetitions of seven different exercises to be performed in 6-8 sessions every day.

Dr. Lee Green, professor of Family Medicine, told ABC News. "Neck pain is a mechanical problem and it makes sense that mechanical treatment works better than a chemical one."

As a practicing Tulsa Chiropractor it is extremely important to recognize the benefits of each of these different treatments. When you combine chiropractic treatment of the spine itself, not only achieve relief of pain but to repair the spine and restore its normal joint function, and the benefits of stretching and strengthening the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support the spine, you have an incredible 1-2 punch in the treatment of either acute or chronic neck pain.

True or False: Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis.
Wed, 12 Oct 2011 16:04:41 -0700

While knuckle cracking can certainly aggravate those around you, it's not true that it will cause arthritis. This is one of those myths that's been around for ages.

Dimitrios Pappas MD, assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, says, "There have been a few studies on this. None of them shows any change in the occurrence of arthritis between people who habitually crack their knuckles and those who do not."

However, there is a study that found that people who habitually crack their knuckles have weaker grip strength over the years. And, as we tell patients all the time, cracking any joint in the body dozens of times every day can cause ligament damage.

Fallen arches, or flat feet, can cause low back injuries due to excess  pressure on the alignment of the ankles, knees, hips and  low back. We  discussed this in our last post, but what we didn't talk about was how  years of having fallen arches, if left uncorrected, can lead to some  serious consequences.

Over time, as a person ages and the condition is not addressed, significant abnormal wear and tear starts to create damage in the soft tissue in the ankles, knees, hips and low back. The results are increased pain and injuries, and sometimes increased arthritic degeneration. At some point, knees and hips can suffer so much damage that replacements become necessary.

Much of this can be avoided if the condition is assessed early and corrective foot orthotics are used to take the stress off these joints. Often people wait until they are in significant pain and some damage can even become irreversible.
