According to the State Board of Education as of 4-27-17, the State owes local education agencies $1,106,085,191. That is $1.1 Billion in non-General State Aid dollars. That represents $541.73 for every student in Illinois. This amount does the not even include 4th quarter categorical vouchers yet.
Registration for Returning Students

We have begun the general registration period for returning students. Please note the following:

  • The data side of registration (School Insight) remains open.
  • The fee payment side (RevTrak) is due July 15th.
  • Registration Instructions and New RevTrak credentials were sent home with students on Friday, April 7th.
  • When logging in to parent portal, you should see all of your students. If you do not see all of your students, please contact Mark Hupp (mhupp@palos128.org). Missing sibling status and/or duplicate contact information can cause this issue. It can be fixed quickly.
  • We do NOT recommend completing the data portion of registration with a smart phone.
IJHS Library
Recently we have learned that there is some misinformation circulating within our community in regards to the library at Independence Junior High School. Let us first reassure everyone that the IJHS library is not going away. If any staff member has said that the library is being eliminated, that information was simply not correct.

Last year, the Board approved bonds for the use of capital improvements to all four buildings. One of the planned capital improvements will be to renovate the library space at Independence. This space is under utilized by our students and is not conducive to small, collaborative groups. Currently our students have to find areas on the floors and in the hallways throughout the building for group work. Our goal is to create an open-concept commons area where small groups of students can gather to work on projects and other classroom activities. The furniture within the renovated library will be mobile in order to be flexible for various uses. Another benefit to opening up the library area is that we hope to increase the circulation of books by eliminating the hallways and forcing all students through the library area.

Over the past year, our English/Language Arts teachers have worked to develop classroom libraries as students are more likely to select books when they have immediate access to them. Additionally, it is our teachers who best know what genre of books their students are most interested in and the level of book they should be reading. Many of our reference books or other works of fiction/non-fiction will be offered to classroom teachers to build their classroom libraries. Books that are outdated will be donated. The remaining books will stay in the library for circulation.

IJHS teachers were invited to participate in discussions regarding our library renovation. The teachers that attended those discussions can confirm that a library will of course still be in place at IJHS.

We are very excited about this project and what it offers to our students and staff. We are confident that our students and staff will benefit greatly from this renovation.

Town Hall Meeting February 9th at Navajo

On Thursday, February 9th from 6-7 p.m. District 128 will host the second in a series of town hall meetings aimed at discussing topics raised from our parents and community. We have found that many parents have the same questions, so it is nice to be able to provide background and clarity around like questions in a larger setting. The meeting will be held in the gym at Navajo Heights Elementary School, 12401 S Oak Park Ave.

If you have a question or an issue you'd like for us to present on, you are encouraged to submit it to info@palos128.org in advance, however you can also write your question down on a notecard at the start of the meeting. If you are not able to attend the town hall and have a question or issue to discuss, please feel free to contact your school principal or myself, Dr. Dawn Green, or submit your question or concern via info@palos128.org, and you will receive a prompt reply.

Parent Portal Tip Sheet Available
Currently, the new Teacher Ease parent portal is open to the junior high only. The elementary schools will be opening to parents later in the year. If you are a parent of a student at Independence, please find the Parent Portal Guide.
