Reno firefighters honored for saving one of their own

While out on a call September 1, Reno Fire Department firefighter Darrell Simmons was stung by a bee. After arriving back at Station 8, he went into anaphylactic shock. Immediately, firefighters Roger Mooney, Art Reitz and Jeremy Berzinski began administering medical care. "One helped him breathe, one administered meds and the other held him up so he wouldn't hit his head," Reitz says.

BLM: Duck Hill, Chimney 2 Fires Started by Target Shooters

The Bureau of Land Management today said it is looking for a suspect who was witnessed shooting targets, activity that started yesterday’s Duck Hill Fire in Washoe Valley. The agency also said that the Chimney 2 fire north of Sun Valley was started by target shooting. “BLM is requesting any information about the person responsible for starting the Duck Hill Fire who fled the scene and did not report the fire to 911,” said Lisa Ross, agency spokesperson.

Reno Fire Department Holds Badge Pinning And Promotion Ceremony

The Reno Fire Department recognized more than 15 promotions and three new employees at their badge pinning and promotion ceremony on Thursday. The ceremony was held at 10 a.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center. Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran presented three lifesaving medals to a captain and two firefighters for taking action to save the life of one of their own on the evening of September 1 at Reno Fire Station 8.

New East Fork Fire Protection District recruits start their 12-week training Oct. 1 at the Regional Fire Academy in Carson City. "East Fork has been facing an unprecedented challenge of staff vacancies due to retirements, employee resignations, and academy failures," Chief Tod Carlini said. "Combine that with five-long term injury vacancies, the district has been short staffed by nine vacancies for several months.

"Chimney Fire" burns 120 acres north of Sun Valley

A pair of wildfires kept local agencies busy Thursday afternoon. The largest--named the Chimney Fire--broke out shortly before noon, sending up a dark cloud of smoke in the skies north of town. It was burning on BLM land and would eventually draw crews and equipment from several agencies, but Truckee Meadows Fire was first to respond.

Nevada appeals FEMA wildfire rejection, with assist from Senator

Nevada is once again asking the federal government for help covering the costs of a major fire. The difference this time is they’ve got help in Congress. Kacey KC, Nevada’s state forester and fire warden, is appealing to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for help recouping costs associated with the South Sugarloaf Fire that burned about 230,000 acres, an area more than twice the size of Carson City.

Henderson police report 2 children, woman killed in 'apparent murder suicide'; home set on fire

Henderson Police said two children and a woman were killed in an "apparent murder suicide" where a home was also set on fire Thursday night. Police, Henderson firefighters and a SWAT team were called to the 1100 block Paradise Garden Drive at 7:30 p.m. with callers saying multiple shots were fired, Henderson Police said.

Nevada Task Force returning after lending aid in storm-ravaged Carolinas new

Nevada Task Force-1 is expected to return to the Silver State this weekend after making more than 80 rescues in the storm-ravaged Carolinas. Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said in an email the crew would spend much of Thursday fixing their vehicles and trailers. The Task Force was sent to North Carolina to provide assistance in anticipation of Hurricane Florence.

No one injured in vacant house fire in central Las Vegas

No one was injured early Friday morning after a vacant house caught fire in the central valley. Crews responded about 1:45 a.m. to reports of a fire at 511 S. Tonopah Drive, near Alta and Rancho drives, according to Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski. Crews broke through the boarded-up front door of the home to reach the fire inside, Szymanski said, and firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes.

Firefighters knock down brush fire near Airport Road in Douglas County

East Fork Fire Protection District in Douglas County responded Wednesday afternoon to a brush fire burning in the area of a controlled burn near the Minden-Tahoe Airport. Palomino Valley fire fully contained

Nevada Task Force-1 rescues 19 adults, 2 children in two days in North Carolina

The Nevada Task Force-1 rescued nearly two dozen people and pets over the past two days in Beaufort, North Carolina. Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said the 16-person water rescue team rescued 19 adults, two children and 10 pets by boat as part of the relief efforts after Hurricane Florence made landfall last week.

Las Vegas-area events to aid Jacksonville shooting victims

Douglas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit pulls body from 1,062 feet in Lake Tahoe

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit (Marine 7) recovered a body from a depth of 1,062 feet in Lake Tahoe on Monday. The recovery was made while searching for a missing person, who reportedly drowned the week prior, according to a press release from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. The identity of the decedent is being withheld until the family has been notified.

Carson City emergency crews called to severed gas line on Highway 50 East

A welder sparked a wildfire that has burned about 80 acres (32 hectares) in the Palomino Valley north of Reno. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District spokesman Adam Mayberry says a person who was welding accidentally started the Pioche Fire that broke out about 10:30 a.m. Sunday near Ironwood and Wilcox Ranch roads.

After October 1st, paramedics train to apply military trauma care

A rescue team from Nevada brought 60 people to safety along with family pets during a 20-hour shift in eastern North Carolina. Nevada Task Force One, a 16-person water rescue team, was deployed in North Carolina in support of rescue efforts after the landfall of Hurricane Florence. The storm has resulted in at least 14 deaths and an estimate of $30 billion in damages in North and South Carolina.

Las Vegas family in critical condition after suffering from carbon monoxide exposure

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said a family of five is in critical condition after being overcome by carbon monoxide in their home in the northwest valley Saturday morning. According to LVFR, fire dispatchers were notified after the father called and said there was an unknown odor in the house causing everyone to become dizzy and nauseous.
